Burketown is a small town in the Gulf of Carpentaria region of Queensland, Australia. It is located on the Albert River, approximately 660 kilometres (410 mi) south-west of Cairns and 830 kilometres (520 mi) north-west of Townsville. The town has a population of around 500 people and is the administrative centre of the Carpentaria Shire. The surrounding area is rich in natural attractions, including a vast wetland system, Aboriginal rock art, and fishing spots. The local economy is based on agriculture and tourism. Burketown is known for its annual barramundi fishing competitions and is a popular destination for bird watching.
