Aniak is a city located in the Bethel Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska, near the Aniak Airport (ANI). With a population of 690 as of the 2010 census, it is one of the larger cities in the area. It is located on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River, at its junction with the Aniak River. The city serves as the administrative center of the Bethel Census Area, and is the gateway to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region. Aniak is the traditional home of the Deg Hit’an, a group of Athabaskan-speaking people. The city is known for its salmon fishing, local crafts and art, and traditional Native foods. Aniak is accessible by air and by river, with scheduled airline service from Anchorage and Bethel, as well as river transportation up and down the Kuskokwim River.
