Alakanuk is a city in Wade Hampton County, Alaska, United States, located 2 nautical miles west of the central business district of Alakanuk Airport (AUK). It is located on the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta, 15 miles northwest of Bethel and 485 miles west of Anchorage. The city has a population of 804, according to the 2010 census, making it the largest city in the area. It is home to the Alakanuk Traditional Council, which is a federally recognized tribe of Yup’ik Eskimos. The city is primarily a fishing and hunting village and the main source of livelihood for its citizens. There are also several stores, a clinic, and a school. The nearby Kuskokwim River is a major fishing destination for the Yup’ik people and provides a variety of fish and game for the locals.
